Happy cows, healthy planet, premium beef
We use profitable regenerative ranching to provide our customers with delicious, healthy beef while building soil fertility, restoring biodiversity, improving water quality, and using natural processes to restore carbon to the soil.

P&O Ranch
P&O Ranch
The story of the Matador Ranch begins with Phillip Poindexter and William Orr. In 1865, Poindexter and Orr drove a portion of their herd from California into Montana. Arriving at Bannack in the winter, they were unable to find grazing in the area and acquired land on Blacktail Creek. Amazed at how the cattle flourished on the nutritious and varied grasses native to the area, Orr and Poindexter brought over the remainder of the herd from Shasta Valley in California to the Beaverhead Valley until they had their entire stock business located along Blacktail Creek.

Fred Koch purchased the former P & O Ranch in the early 1950s, forming the foundation of what would eventually become the Matador Cattle Company’s Beaverhead Ranch. Over the next 70 years, the ranch grew through innovation and excellent business practices. Spanning more than 60 miles from end to end, it now operates on over 340,000 acres of deeded and leased land, striving to build a profitable cattle operation while enhancing the native ecosystem.

In December 2021, Rupert Murdoch acquired the iconic Matador and Selkirk Ranches, merging them into what is now Matador Ranch and Cattle. This merger reflects Mr. Murdoch's vision of advancing an already robust cattle operation within a stunning, resource-rich landscape. Recognizing the land's deep history and vital role in the local ecosystem, he aims to leverage its resources to drive innovation in agriculture. At the same time, he is committed to working in harmony with nature to further enhance the thriving landscape.
Pushing the envelope of agricultural innovation
While MRC stands rooted in the experience of those who came before us, our vision is to combine that essential knowledge with new-age solutions and cutting-edge ideas to build resilience and keep the ranching industry thriving for generations to come.
